Can my son travel to a differant state by himself?
My son is going to Stockton, California to visit his grandparents for the remainder of the Summer. I cannot go with him though. So I was wondering if he can go to the train station and but tickets himself and get on the train. And also about the border, will he be able to go by himself?

5 year olds should not be by themselves

you son has to be 18 to ride with out a parent, and to go out of state, you need a chaperone and you will have to pay one to do the job.

border? If he is a citizen of the United States he doesn't need to worry about the border. Anyway, it all depends on his age. How old is he? If he is a minor, then most likely you will need to buy the ticket for him. Find out this information by asking the train company. They should have a website. If he is a minor which I assume, there maybe special arrangements you can make with the company that will watch out for you child. People send their kids on planes by themselves more than you think. I'm sure the same goes for trains.

It would be better to buy him a plane ticket. They aren't that expensive, and it would be safer.

How old is your son? Depending on his maturity level but under 14-15, I would say no... And also, how far is this travel?? You should at least see him on the train safely and arrange for someone to be waiting at his destination.

You don't say how old he is. You also don't say how long he will be on the train. The rules may be different if it is a 30 minute train ride than if it is a three day trip. You can call Amtrak (or other railroad) to find out what kinds of restrictions they have. You should be able to purchase tickets over the Internet.

Depends on his age if he is mature enoph he should be just fine

this is what you do-- if it a good enough train company you can request assistance with him at the train station all the way to the destination (like a plane ride) just when you order the tickets, call or talk to a rep. and tell them the situation, and make sure they can help. usually they will have someone escort him to the proper train and brief him on the trip, then if there is any changeovers a steward/ess will help him get to the next train... good luck!

You left out an important fact...how old is he? You can purchase tickets ahead of time for him and give those to him and you can alert the train that he is a minor. What "border" are you talking about? Americans can freely travel anywhere in this country. I must caution you; if he is a child, you are taking a chance letting him go by himself in this day and age of perverts everywhere. Can't his grandparents come to pick him up or you drive him? If he were my son, and a child, I would not let him go alone.

If you don't know this stuff how in the world do you expect a mere small child to ? Do not send a small child anywhere alone unless you want him kidnapped, raped, abused, sold into the sex slavery, or maybe just killed all alone on the plane because of terroists!!! You are an unfit mother to even think about doing that! Get some parenting classes!God please help this woman, Amen
